Within the iPhone and iPad user community, the term DFU (Device Firmware Update) may be familiar. However, if you are one of those who have recently acquired a new iOS device, the term will most likely sound Chinese to you.

Next, we show you the advantages of being able to put your iPhone in DFU mode, either because you want to install a different version of iOS, or because you want to recover it from a general system failure.

When to put my iPhone in DFU mode

To tell the truth, putting iPhone in DFU mode is not something you will need to do often, but it is worth knowing the steps to follow. Depending on the iPhone model and its keypad, you will have to follow a combination of keys.

First of all, it may happen that your iPhone or iPad has been blocked, or its screen shows the apple symbol without the possibility of further progress. It is in this case when you must resort to this option.

For its part, there are also many users who use DFU to reinstall an older or different version of iOS on their device than they currently have. It is usually the result of having jailbroken the iPhone and iPad .

Last and not least, some users turn to it when, after installing an iOS version, they find that their terminal has errors or is much slower than usual. With DFU you can go back to a previous version of iOS with which the iPhone was much thinner.

DFU mode allows you to connect the terminal with iTunes to receive commands from a computer, instead of starting using the iBoot bootloader on Apple devices.

Since the device interprets that it has no starting system, it allows a new one to be installed. In this way, the steps to follow are the following:

1. Open iTunes on your Mac and connect the terminal

To put the iPhone in DFU mode it is necessary to launch the iTunes program on a computer and connect the terminal through the USB port.

This is when you must turn off the device by pressing and holding the power button for 3 seconds until the red ‘turn off’ slider appears. Slide your finger. This is valid for any version of iPhone and iPad.

2. Start your iPhone again

Once the phone has completely turned off, turn it on again while holding down both the Power and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds.

In the case of the iPhone X, iPhone XS or even the iPhone 11, the right combination is the power button and the volume down button. Proceed the same, for at least 10 seconds. After this time, release the start but hold the second combination.

It is then when you will see that the ‘Recovery Mode’ screen appears completely in black, proof that everything has gone smoothly. You are already in DFU mode. Otherwise, don’t despair. Turn on the terminal as usual and repeat the indicated steps again. When the restore mode window appears press ok.

3. Install the desired iOS version

Using iTunes, reinstall iOS without deleting the data. Click on the ‘Restore iPhone or iPad’ option. If you had the ‘Search’ option turned on, type in your Apple ID and corresponding password after restoring it to activate the device.

At the end of the process, you can choose to restore the backup you had or configure the device as a new one with the factory settings.
