How the iPhone and Apple Watch protect you from hearing loss

There are many useful health features on the iPhone and Apple Watch, but not everyone knows about some of them. These include noise level measurement and headphone volume limiting. Here’s how iPhone and Apple Watch protect you from hearing loss.

What volume is too high?

What level of noise is harmful to health? It depends on how long you are exposed to loud noise. Here is what Apple writes:

Frequent prolonged exposure to sounds above 80 dB can cause permanent damage. In such cases, use hearing protection or go to a quieter place.

Temporary hearing loss can be caused by exposure to the following noise levels:

  • 80 dB: 5 hours 30 minutes per day
  • 85 dB: 1 hour 45 minutes per day
  • 90 dB: 30 minutes per day
  • 95 dB: 10 minutes per day
  • 100 dB: even a few minutes a day

How to Check Noise Level on iPhone and iPad

  • Open the Settings app and select the Control Center section.
  • Add the Hearing module to the control center.
  • Connect your headphones to your iPhone.
  • Now open Control Center and click on the ear icon.
  • To turn on notifications about too high headphone volume, go to “Settings” > “Accessibility” > “Audio visualization” and turn on the “Headphones notifications” option.
  • You can limit the headphone volume through “Settings” > “Sounds, haptics” > “Headphone safety” > “Loud sounds quieter”.

  • If you have music turned on in your headphones, you can see the real-time dB level by tapping the hearing icon in Control Center.
    • If the indicator is green, the volume level is acceptable, and if it is yellow, the volume is too high.

  • When music is not playing, you can use the headphone microphone to measure the noise level around you.
  • Tap the microphone icon labeled  Live Listen in the bottom left corner.

  • You can view your noise level measurement history in the Health app under the Overview > Hearing tab.

How to measure noise levels on Apple Watch

On Apple Watch, you can measure the audio volume level in the headphones, as well as the level of extraneous noise. To do this, there is a special application “Noise” with a handy addition for the dial.

  • To measure ambient noise, open the Noise app on your Apple Watch.
  • If you haven’t used the app yet, enable the feature.
  • You can also add an app extension to your watch face for quick access.
  • If you didn’t turn on notifications when you set up the feature, you can do so through the Apple Watch app on iPhone.

  • To measure your headphone volume on your Apple Watch, open the Watch Control Center, swipe down, and tap the ear icon.
