How to Lock Camera on iPhone, iPad, or Mac

Turn Off Camera on iPhone: The iPhone has one of the best mobile cameras, but not everyone needs it. For example, you may want to lock the camera on your child’s device or on a work gadget. You can also block access to the camera on the lock screen so that no one can take unwanted pictures with your device while you’re not looking.

If you never use a webcam on your MacBook, you can turn it off completely to protect your privacy.

When you return to the home screen of your iPhone or iPad, you’ll see that the Camera app icon is gone. It won’t be in the app library or on the Spotlight search interface.

When you lock your device, you’ll notice that the camera icon on the lock screen has turned gray. The camera can no longer be opened even from the lock screen. If you swipe it to the left, nothing will happen either.

What happens when the camera is locked

All cameras are disabled: Depending on the iPhone model, you may have one, two, or three main cameras and one front-facing camera. Screen time limits will block all cameras. Face ID will continue to work.

FaceTime not working: The FaceTime app will disappear from your iPhone and iPad, and you will no longer be able to use it for video and audio calls. You’ll see FaceTime on your Mac, but you can only use it for audio calls.

FaceTime audio calls don’t work: FaceTime audio calls won’t work in the Phone, Contacts, Messages, and Siri apps as well.

iPad calls not working: When you lock the camera on your iPad, calls on your iPad won’t work because you don’t have the FaceTime app.

All video calls don’t work: Since the camera will be locked throughout the system, you won’t be able to use it on apps like WhatsApp, Skype, Slack, etc.

You can’t scan QR codes: Even if you add a QR code scan button to Control Center, you won’t be able to scan the codes. When the button is pressed, a black screen will be displayed.

Snaps and live streams in apps don’t work: You won’t be able to take photos and videos on third-party apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter, etc.

The home screen layout will change: In some cases, especially older versions of iOS, the layout of apps on the home screen will change dramatically.
