Do you want to inject a little personality into your tweets and emails? So you’re interested in knowing how to use emojis on Mac.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many words is an emoji worth? Emoji are becoming commonplace in our digital world, helping to express emotion in our texts, tweets and even on other social networks like Instagram or Snapchat. It’s easy to access emoji on iOS and Android, but what about Mac?
Although not as intuitive as your iPhone, you can access hundreds of emoji through your Mac. Your work emails will never be the same again! 🤘🏻
How to access emoji on Mac
It may not be obvious to the naked eye, but there are several ways to access emoji on your Mac.
The most convenient way to access the emoji selector on your Mac is through a keyboard shortcut:
- Place the cursor where you want to insert the emoji in a text window (either in a tweet , in a note or even in Photoshop).
- On your keyboard, press ‘Command + Control + Spacebar’ to access the emoji picker.
- Browse and click the emoji you want to use to insert it.
Similar to iOS, emoji falls into several categories, including Smileys & People, Animals & Nature, and Objects, but if there’s a specific emoji you have in mind, you can also use the search bar to try to find it.
The name of the emoji doesn’t always match what it stands for, but it should work most of the time. 🤷🏻♂️
Although it is mainly for the emoji, you can also use this method to access less used symbols.
Add the emoji picker to the menu bar
If you can’t seem to remember the keyboard shortcut to access the emoji picker on the go, you always have the option to add it to the menu bar at the top of your Mac.
- Click on the ‘Apple’ icon at the top left of your Mac screen.
- Click on ‘System Preferences’.
- Select ‘Keyboard’.
- Check the option box next to ‘Show keyboard and emoji viewer in menu bar’.
You should now see the emoji picker icon next to the wifi, Bluetooth, and other macOS icons in the upper right of the screen. Just click on it when you want to insert an emoji. 😎
Touch bar on MacBook Pro
If you want a more iOS-like experience, you can always spend a pretty penny on a MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. This technology was first introduced in 2017, and essentially provides users with a contextual function bar that will change depending on the application.
By hand, if you are writing a message in Mail or Messages, you should see an emoji button appear in the Touch Bar. Just tap on the icon and scroll to find the emoji you want.
Admittedly, it’s not a good reason to spend more than 1,300 euros on a 13-inch MacBook Pro, but if you were thinking of buying one anyway, it’s a nice added bonus. 🤑
